Passengers tell of frustration as new lift fails at tube station

A new lift installed In December at a North London Tube station was out-of-order for over a week in January, according to residents.

MyLondon reported that Colindale Station was reopened following a major revamp, including step-free access, in late December but issues arose within weeks.

The website reported that locals were left “disappointed” with the makeover, after the lift broke down. One father told how he struggles to take his one-year-old daughter to school in her pushchair without the help of the lift.

He told MyLondon: “The lift has now been out of order for over a week. There have been no clear updates on when it will be repaired. This is particularly disappointing given how recently it was launched and how important step-free access is for residents.

“I am a father of a one-year-old baby and we started putting her into nursery in January. Our nursery is not in Colindale so we have to make use of the lift every day with our pushchair.

“Now it’s very inconvenient. But thanks to some of the other passengers who helped us with lifting the pushchair up and down the stairs. However, we really can’t do this every day, and there are other parents or even wheelchairs user who had been waiting for this lift for so long.”

Transport for London told MyLondon it was working hard to fix the lift as soon as possible and it apologised to customers for the disruption.

My London reported that transport bosses said the revamped station will support an additional 11,400 homes in Colindale. The station now has a wider entrance area, and has become the 94th station to provide full step-free access for passengers.
