NRAC Conference 2015
Designed to appeal to all those involved in the provision, design and management of the built environment, this is the essential conference for anybody with an interest in accessibility, inclusive design and the building environment. The key topics the conference will cover include:
- Equality Act 2010 case law and out of court settlements, by Unity Law
- The new Approved Document ‘M’– Volume 1, by Richard Harral of the Department of Communities and Local Government.
- A glimpse into the role of accessibility standards in Europe, by Chiara Giovannini of ANEC
- Final speaker to be confirmed shortly

At just £125 inc VAT for the whole day, the conference offers excellent value for busy professionals to update and extend their knowledge on issues related to the design and management of inclusive, accessible buildings and spaces.
Last year’s conference was a sellout (100 people). Spaces are limited so book early to avoid disappointment.

| 14.00 | A glimpse into the role of standards to foster Accessibility in Europe
Chiara will address important question from a European perspective. The role of standards and legislation? What is ISO 21542 and why is it relevant? What is the situation at the European level and what’s the driving force and headline timeframes? What would happen if a European Standard on access to the built environment is adopted, particularly the implications for the UK? | 15.30 | Approved Document ‘M’ 2015 and the future
On the 1st of October the new Approved Document’s will come into effect. The new Volume 1: Dwellings set out three categories of housing, broadly equivalent defined in accessibility terms as ‘visitable’ ‘accessible and adaptable’ and ‘wheelchair user dwellings’. This new approach paves the way for a significant step change in relation to housing accessibility, giving Local Authorities around the country the ability to require different levels of accessible housing provision through planning policy. As Local Authorities around the country set out their policy this is likely to be a significant change for those designing and constructing housing. Richard Harral will summarise the technical requirements, give an overview of the thinking behind the changes and outline planning guidance in relation to use of the new optional Requirements. He will also outline the Departments ongoing research, including the benefits and evidence for accessible housing and current thinking about Volume 2: buildings other than dwellings.
